The Lady Slicers won every event in their season opener tonight against the Wheeler Bearcats. Cheering through their masks, the Slicers jumped into the 2020-2021 season with a big splash.
In individual events, sophomore Caiya Cooper won the 200 Freestyle and 500 Freestyle. Junior Becca Shaffer won the 200 IM and 100 Butterfly. Senior Alicia Wireman won the 50 Freestyle. Junior Callie Hekter won the 100 Freestyle and 100 Breaststroke. Sophomore Lauren Miskowicz won the 100 Backstroke and Sophomore Emily Bolen won diving. The 200 Medley Relay and 400 Freestyle Relay of Miskowicz, Cooper, Shaffer and Wireman both dominated their events while finishing first. The 200 Freestyle relay of Samira Arnsbarger, Ava Allen, Hekter and Sarita Pillai also finished first. With new coaches all around and new practice regimens for the Lady Slicers, their performance was outstanding. I couldn’t be prouder of this team.
The LaPorte Athletic Department also honored longtime IHSAA Officials Gloria and Roger Dombkowski for their 37 years of service to the sport of swimming. The Dombkowskis were presented with honorary Slicers letters and vintage swimming and diving sweatshirts.
The Slicers host Knox on Thursday.
