The Girls Varsity Gymnastics team earned their highest team score of the season with a 99.8 and the gymnasts scored many personal bests. Merrillville won with a 103.9. Senior Madison Esmeyer led the Slicers with a 4th place all around (33.35) and finished 2nd on vault (8.45), 4th on bars (7.4), 7th on beam (8.5) and 3rd on floor (8.8). Junior Ella Schable scored her highest all around of the season with a 32.65 placing 6th. Schable placed 10th on vault (7.6), 5th on bars (7.5), 6th on beam (8.65) and earned a personal best score of the season with a 8.9 finishing 2nd. Freshman Ava Penziol scored her highest all around with a 32.55 finishing 8th, placed 9th on vault (8.0), 7th on bars (7.4), 7th on beam with a personal best score of 8.5 and 4th on floor with a personal best score of 8.65.
Nieya Abel led the Merrillville Pirates with first place finishes in all around (35.05), vault (9.3), and floor (9.15). Abel finished 2nd on bars (7.9) and 5th on beam (8.7). Emily Jimenez finished 2nd all around (34.45), 5th on vault (8.25), won bars (8.7) 4th on beam (8.85), and placed 4th on floor (8.65). Destinee Weaver placed 3rd all around (33.4), 7th on vault (8.1), 7th on bars (7.4), won beam with a 9.35, and placed 6th on floor (8.55)
Other Slicer standouts were Sophomore Rosie Korell who earned a personal best scores in all around (31.9 for 9th), bars (7.0 for 11th) and 2nd on beam (8.9). Korell placed 4th on vault (8.3), and 9th on floor (7.7). Sophomore Kate Thibideau also earned personal best scores in all around (30.0 for 10th), bars (7.05 for 10th) and beam (7.7 for 11th). Thibideau placed 6th on vault (8.15) and 10th on floor (7.1). Junior Samara Hale earned a personal best on beam today with an 8.35 for 10th place and scored a 7.25 on vault for 11th.
The Slicers have been making improvements with each meet and are gaining confidence as they head into the Chesterton Invitational on Saturday, January 30.
