Softball drops a close game to Westville

Late Score Costs LaPorte LaPorte stayed in it until the end, but Westville pulled away late in a 5-4 victory on Tuesday at Kesling Park - Softball Facility. The game was tied at four in the top of the sixth when Kierstin Vargas grounded out, scoring one run. Westville was the first to get on the board in the first when Maddie Cole grounded out, scoring one run. LaPorte took the lead in the bottom of the first. Shayla Sorg doubled, scoring two runs, to give LaPorte the upper hand, 2-1. A triple by Megan Zolvinski extended the LaPorte lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the third inning. Vargas doubled to left field, which helped Westville tie the game at three in the top of the fifth. LaPorte took the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Mia Maxel tripled, scoring one run, to give LaPorte the advantage, 4-3. Westville jumped back into the lead in the top of the sixth inning after Kiersten Vaughn singled down the left field line, and Vargas grounded out, each scoring one run. Maxel stepped in the circle first for LaPorte. The righty gave up 10 hits and five runs (two earned) over seven innings, striking out 12 and walking none. Vargas started the game for Westville. The starter gave up nine hits and four runs (three earned) over seven innings, striking out 15 and walking one. Sorg drove the middle of the lineup, leading LaPorte with two runs batted in. The right-handed hitter went 1-for-4 on the day. Madi Squire and Maxel each collected two hits for La Porte Varsity Slicers. Westville piled up 10 hits in the game. Vaughn and Miranda Sparks were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected three hits for Westville. Vargas provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led Westville with two runs batted in. The pitcher went 1-for-4 on the day. Next up for La Porte Varsity Slicers is a game against John Glenn Falcons on Wednesday.
