LaPorte Slicers JV Baseball Sweeps Double Header Against Lowell

In the first game of the double header Khalen Matzke led the Slicers to a 5-1 victory over Lowell. Matzke struck out 10 batters while surrendering four hits and one run over six innings. LaPorte opened the scoring in the bottom of the first thanks to two sacrifice flys. Cody Benedict and Joey Kirk each drove in runs with the sacrifice fly. Nate Moses, Owen Barenthin, Matzke and Reed Raymond each collected a hit for the Slicers. LaPorte had patience at the plate, tallying seven walks for the game. Keegan Ramos and Raymond led the team with two free passes each. Barenthin stole three bases as the Slicers ran wild on the base paths, tallying eight for the game. Laporte was sure handed in the field and didn’t commit a single error. Dawson Shreve had the most chances with 14. Steven Poe wrapped up the game on the mound as he threw one inning of zero-run ball in relief. Poe surrendered zero hits, striking out two and walking none. In the second game it was Preston Scheidt’s turn on the mound and he picked right up where Matzke left off defeating Lowell 9-2. Scheidt earned the win for the Slicers allowing three hits and two runs over six innings, striking out eight and walking two. Evan Sittig came in for the final inning giving up zero hits, striking out one and walking one. LaPorte opened the scoring in the first after Keegan Ramos doubled, scoring one run. The Slicers added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on five hits. Joey Kirk homered to right field, scoring two runs, Nate Moses singled, scoring another and Nolan Wilson singled to wrap up the scoring for the inning. Three more runs crossed the plate in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 8-0. Cody Benedict homered to right field scoring two runs and Matzke doubled scoring the other. LaPorte accumulated 14 hits in the game. Benedict, Ramos and Kirk each collected two hits a piece. Benedict and Kirk were a one-two punch in the lineup, as each drove in two runs on homers. Moses, Owen Barenthin and Ramos each stole multiple bases for the Slicers as they stole eight in the game. LaPorte Slicers JV baseball is next in action Tuesday, May 14th, when Valparaiso will come to DeCamp Field. First pitch is scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. start.
