Slicers Go 1-2 in High Jump and Shot Put at Portage Sectional

The LaPorte Boys braved the cold and wind at the Portage Sectional last night to eventually have 8 athletes/relays punch their ticket for next week's Valparaiso Regional in 6 events. Highlighting the evening was two separate 1-2 finishes in the High Jump and Shot Put events. Junior Destin Matzke earned his first individual Sectional Championship by winning the High Jump with a clearance of 6-2. Finishing right behind him was teammate, and fellow Junior Preston Scheidt who set a personal best jump of 6-2 as well. Then to end the evening, Senior and UW-Osh Kosh recruit Malachi Washington continued to add to his list of accolades by winning the Shot Put event with a season best throw of 53' 0.5" after finishing 2nd in the Discus event earlier in the day with a throw of 131-7. Junior Casey Cochran backed up last week's DAC Championship in the Shot Put by finishing 2nd with a throw of 51-11. Also moving on to next week's Valparaiso Regional include Sophomore Caleb Rose, who continued his impressive season by finishing 3rd in the 1600 with a personal best time of 4:30.86. Destin Matzke will also compete in the long jump next week after finishing 3rd with a jump of 21-6.25. Finally, the 4x400 relay team of Andrew McKie, Ayden Hunt, Jermaine Kirkendoll, and Matzke earned their spot in the Regional with a 3rd place finish in a time of 3:35.60.
