The Slicer Junior Varsity (7-0, 2-0 DAC) competed in an all day tournament today at Chesterton Hign School and won all three matches. LPVB beat the Michigan City Wolves (25-22, 25-15), the Portage Indians (25-7, 25-15), and the Chesterton Trojans (25-24, 25-15).
The first game against Michigan City, LaPorte started off strong and fell into a rhythm early on. The Slicer’s defense was outstanding with Ella Benz leading the team with 18 digs and Olivia Voelker with 12. Halle Seaburg was the glue between defense and offense with an exciting 16 assists. Olivia Voelker led LaPorte with a crafty 10 kills and 2 aces. Emma James was also a key component offensively with 7 kills and 3 aces.
The second game of the tournament LaPorte faced the Portage Indians. The Slicers took charge quickly and gained momentum by running a fast tempo offense. Emma James led with 5 kills and both Olivia Voelker and Halle Seaburg had 3 kills each. Justine Talbert led in blocking with 2 solo blocks and also helped her team with 2 kills. Kennedy Land led with 9 assists and 2 aces. Ella Benz also led LaPorte with 10 digs.
The championship match the Slicers played against the Chesterton Trojans. LaPorte started out flat in the first game. Chesterton served tough and kept LPVB on their toes on serve receive passing. Not until the score was 20 to 20 did the Slicers get anything going offensively. After a couple keys points, LaPorte took back the momentum and ended up winning by 1 (in a cap scoring game). The second game of the match went much smoother, the Slicers had a couple crucial runs to place 1st in Chesterton’s JV Invitational. Halle Seaburg and Kennedy Land both led with 14 assists each. Emma James led in offense with 7 kills and 2 aces. Olivia Voelker had 5 kills followed by Jamie Ellis with 4 kills. Justine Talbert put up a big block and led with 2 solo blocks, 3 kills, and 2 aces. Defense dominated throughout the day and especially during the last game. Olivia Voelker led with 9 digs, Emma James with 7, Ella Benz and Averee Tuholski with 6 each.
The Slicer Junior Varsity will play again on Tuesday against the Portage Indians.
